Hi Year 8,

Sorry I can't be there today to teach you. You guys can spend some time writing and recording a commercial for a guitar.

Use images from the web and pictures you can take and put them all into imovie and make a short commercial. You should be able to record your voice over the pictures as they play so think up a good sales pitch. Don't spend too much time choosing pictures as this will leave no time to complete the projects!!!
Make sure that you work in groups of about 2 or 3 and that you are getting the job done.

Keep it short, no more than 30 seconds and make sure you include some information about:

The parts of the guitar
How to change the sound of the guitar - strumming, tone volume knobs etc.
The price of a guitar - beginner to professional.

Save your work to the USB in my drawer (the one with the blue neck strap attached) with your names and class details as the file name.

A short explanation of Bugling on Remembrance day

The Meaning Of The Bugle Calls

Many young people are mystified by bugle calls on Anzac Day
and Remembrance Day.
For this reason it has been suggested that the meaning
behind these calls is explained.

During the service there will be two bugle calls.
The first is the “Last Post”.

"Last Post" is the call sounded at 10pm each evening to inform
the soldiers that they should be inside their quarters for the night.
It signified the end of the day's activities and ushers in a period of
rest and quietness.
It is sounded at military funerals and commemorative
services to indicate that the soldier has completed his life's
work and has entered into his rest.

The second, following the reading of the Ode, and the
two minutes silence, is “Reveille”.

"Reveille" is the trumpet or bugle call sounded in all military
barracks and camps first thing in the morning to awaken
the soldiers and tell them to get up and dress.
It is also sounded at military funerals and
commemorative services to signify the resurrection
of the body after death and the awakening of
the soul into a new life.

Goto FILE - NEW - Slideshow.
Use images and simple language that a kid in year 3 could understand to show how the guitar has developed over the years.
Start with the earliest versions of a guitar you can find and work forward to the guitars of today.
Include details of what changed from each different guitar to the next in simple language or pictures.
YOU SHOULD HAVE BETWEEN 5 and 8 SLIDES.

Recording compositions

Hi Elective students,

This week you need to start thinking about recording our pieces for the assessment task. Even if you have only chords etc you can record them and put the vocals in later. If you are doing a solo piano piece see me and I will get you to play it into the computer and create a score. Make sure you can play with a beat for the recording.

If you need help recording using the computer see me or another stuident who has done it. I CANNOT SUPERVISE EVERY STUDENTS RECORDING AS THERE ARE 50 ELECTIVE MUSIC STUDENTS THIS YEAR. you need to take on the task of learning how to do a basic recording.

There is a link list on this blog for Garage Band recording instructions and I will put some up for Acid Pro 6/Express.

G'Day Year 8,

There is a new link here to some lesons online all about power chords. You will have done a worksheet and some composing using power chords but this info is a great resource if you forget how to do them. Power Chords are mostly used for rock music with the distortion sound on the amplifier. We will have a go at them next lesson I am around.

Year 8 Music GARAGE BAND ACTIVITY

Hi Year 8,

I can't be there today unfortunately so here is your task for Friday 15th lesson.

Form groups of 2 or 3 (only 10 groups as there are only 10 Macbooks)

Open up garage band and have a go at putting in some loops from the loop library.

I have put some screenshots up to help you get started, they may be a bit small to read (try using the programs help and typing in questions!!!) If you get stuck go to the links for Garage Band on the right of this post to see some basic tutorials for using garage band.

You need to create a 30 second piece of music for a radio advertisment for a product like a.) A new Car!! b.) A new Album c.) Another product that you can negotiate with your teacher!!!

Hi all,

Just a reminder that there will be some more assessment tasks completed this week on wednesday, and possibly some more on friday (Crystal?!?).
I hope that you have all enjoyed the topic and the chance to play for your school community.
If you would like to put on a lunchtime concert at any stage please come and see me and I will organise a venue/ PA for you to use. Mr Brogan is VERY keen to see students performing in the school during lunchtimes and I am always willing to help you organise the performances.

ALSO...... I will be doing some thinking about leadership positions for the music department for next year so there may be some more oportunities for you students to take on management and organisational roles within the school community. Keep that in mind ready for next years year 10 students.

REFLECTION & Practice Diary

Hi all,

Please remember that you can email me or post at this site as a comment your reflection from your performance. I would love to have at least your practice diaries before the end of term so I can mark them.
It would be great to have some video reflections if those movie making buffs are out there.
Remember that you can reflect in any format you wish..... be creative!

I will post the reflection questions when I can here so you can complete it at home.

Both parts are worth 10% of your final mark for music (that is for the whole course!!) so don't risk a few percent by leaving it too late. I will be deducting marks for late work without a good reason! If you are having difficulties come and see me to discuss an extension on the due date.

CONCERTS for elective music

Hi all Elective students.

Due to a lack of time this term some of the concert performances will have to be done next term. I will let you know as soon as I have confirmed the dates and location for the concert.

I am keen to have a concert in week 6 or 7 of next term at night for the parents etc to showcase your work from the year and it will be probably the last performance for most year 10 students as far as public concerts go. =(

I am happy for you to play another song that you have learned on your own or one that you have played for an exam. If you have the sheet music even better, bring it in to school.

Dont forget the four parts to the test:

A scale.
A melody that you have not seen before - reading music.

Your assessment tasks will begin to loose 10% per day from midnight tonight!! You need to send me your work via email (you should have it. MSN someone who does!!). It will be 20% on the first day back next term as so on till you get 0.

1. choose a song/piece of music from youtube (or somewhere like that) and pretend that you are reviewing that song for the newspaper/blog site. you need to talk about the song and the artist in your review and convince the reader of you opinion. You might like to go to a few review sites to get the basic ideas of how to write a review of a song (www.KrpMag.com) .

Guitar Riffs

Hi Year 8.

Your Task for this/next lesson is to compose your own riff using no more than 3 strings on the guitar. You can use any 3 strings you like. If you are not a good guitar player maybe work with only one or two strings.
The last bit of the task is to write the TAB down in your books so you can play it next time.

In our next lesson you will have to teach your riff to me or another student in the class and have them play it for you.
Keep the KISS principle in mind (Keep It Simple Stupid!!)

Elective Music - Assessment Task 1

I will be giving you a demonstration of your assessment task in the next few weeks. So that you cannot just copy my assessment task and present the same thing twice I will be doing and artist NOT from Australia. I will be attempting to answer the same questions as you and also completing a reference list.

If you are writing a report or essay for your analysis you MUST give me a CD or mp3 with the song(s) on it otherwise you will be marked down fairly severely.

If you need help reading and understanding traditional notation I have created a new link list for you. Go to the site(s) there and you will get some great advice and lessons on how western music (popular, classical etc) is written down and also constructed.

A good tradesperson always knows how to use their tools, so a good musician should always know how to read and write their ideas down!!!

Watch the video on youtube from the links in the right hand side of the page and answer the following questions:

What does the word ‘apartheid’ mean?
Explain how this effected Black traditional musicians.
What styles of music influenced Hugh Masekela?

If you get this done quickly do the following task:

Draw a map of the continent Africa in your books showing the different countries that exist in Africa.
research a traditional african instrument, where does it originate from? What is it made from? What does it sound like? Who uses it?/when is it used most?

Kylie's new album to be free online

Kylie Minogue fans can get a sneak preview of the pop princess's forthcoming album X when it is streamed online from Tuesday.

Four days before Minogue's tenth studio album hits stores, fans will be able to stream the 13 tracks for free on Nine MSN.

The album was recorded in London, Stockholm and Ibiza and features the first new Kylie material since the greatest hits compilation in 2004.

X includes collaborations with the likes of Richard "Biff" Stannard, The Freemasons, Calvin Harris, Greg Kurstin, Eg White, Guy Chambers and Cathy Dennis.

It will be available at music.ninemsn.com.au/kylieminogue for four days, until the album goes on sale on November 24.

Minogue's first single from the album, 2 Hearts, entered the Australian singles chart this week at number one.

Year 8 Assessment Task

Hi Year 8.

Don't forget the backing tracks for your song can be found on G:/music on your or the student log on. You can access that drive from any computer in the school. Use the backing track to help you compose lyrics for your song, sing along to make sure it fits.

There are links to various synopsis' on the right hand side of the blog...... use them to get an idea of how to write a synopsis. You should have about 200 words in your synopsis, but remember:

Quality is better than quantity. I want 200 QUALITY well thought out words, not you writing garbage to make up the 200 words.

Your presentations are happening this week!!!!! Please be ready with all your Ppt and movies. Please make sure you save a copy to your documents on the school server (when you log in go to my computer and look for your drive) as well as to a CD or Flash Disk (USB). This is just in case there is a problem with your flash disc etc.

Hi Year 7,

Check the links under 'Study Skills" for some tips on giving a presentation. Don't forget to rehearse your performance with a friend or another group to help you fix any problems/ add any extra bits into your presentations.

MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE YOUR DRUM KIT OF THE FUTURE IN YOUR PRESENTATIONS.

Whilst Youtube is a good resource for examples it does not give much information about the kit or the history of the kit, I am concerned with the amout of time spent on surfing youtube in class under the guise of getting information. Make sure you use your class time wisely.

Today you will be finding out some information on Indian Music. Use the links on this blog as a starting point for your investigation. answer the following questions:

1. List 3 different styles of Indian Music.
2. Find out about 3 famous performers of Indian music (where, when, what style, what instrument, a famous piece or concert etc) Why are they famous?
3. What are 4 common instruments used in Indian Music?
4. What purpose does the music serve to the performer/listener? Why are the performers creating the music?
5. How are the styles of music linked with the everyday life of an Indian person?

You will be presenting your findings in our next class (informal assessment!!!) along with performing in the style of a Raga.

Hi year 7,

Dont forget to bring your headphones to your classes from now on as you will be doing plenty of playing. There are always headphones here if you forget yours so don't be to worried if you forget yours.
Try Dick Smith for the adaptors for your ipod or mp3 player headphones, I think they are $3.95 from memory.
